Ingredients

  • 1 lb dried great northern beans
  • ½ lb thick-cut bacon
  • 2 large onions
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 1½ cups dark brown sugar
  • ⅓ cup molasses
  • ⅓ cup maple syrup
  • ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Sort and rinse the beans. Soak in water for 1 hour.
  2. Drain and rinse soaked beans. Cook in fresh water for about 1 hour until almost tender.
  3. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C). Cook bacon until crispy; remove from skillet. Sauté onions in reserved fat, add garlic, then stir in sauce ingredients.
  4. Combine beans with the bacon and sauce in a baking dish. Cover and bake for about 2½ hours, stirring every 30 minutes.
