  • 1 blood orange
  • 1 navel orange
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar (divided)
  • 4 tsps grated orange zest
  • 1 cup strained fresh orange juice
  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ½ tsps baking powder
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/3 cup sour cream
  • 3 large eggs

Instructions

  1. Slice blood and navel oranges into thin rounds.
  2. In a saucepan, combine water and 1 cup sugar over medium heat until dissolved. Add orange slices and simmer for about 10 minutes until tender. Let cool.
  3. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  4. In a bowl, mix orange juice, zest, butter, sour cream, and eggs until smooth.
  5. In another bowl, whisk together flour, remaining sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  6. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture until just combined.
  7. Pour half of the candied syrup into a greased cake pan; arrange candied orange slices on top and pour batter over them.
  8. Bake for about 35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  9. Cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before inverting onto a plate to serve.
