  • ¼ cup butter (for toffee sauce)
  • ½ cup brown sugar (for toffee sauce)
  • ¼ cup heavy cream (for toffee sauce)
  • 4 tbsp cornstarch (for toffee sauce)
  • 1 egg (for custard topping)
  • 1 tbsp water (for custard topping)
  • 2 cups milk (for custard topping)
  • 3 egg yolks (for custard topping)
  • ⅓ cup sugar (for custard topping)
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (for custard topping)
  • pinch salt (for custard topping)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract (for custard topping)
  • 1 tbsp butter (for custard topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Peel, core, and slice the Granny Smith apples. Toss with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt; set aside.
  3. For the pie crust, mix flour and salt in a bowl. Cut in cold butter until crumbly. Gradually add ice water until dough forms. Divide into two disks and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Roll out one disk into your pie dish, fill with apple mixture, and prepare toffee sauce by melting butter and brown sugar together; add heavy cream and cornstarch.
  5. Pour toffee sauce over apples and cover with second crust. Seal edges and cut slits for steam.
  6. Bake for about 20 minutes until golden brown.
