  • 1/2 cup sour cream (room temperature)
  • 1 cup butter (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup shortening (Crisco)
  • 6 cups sifted powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C) and prepare three 6-inch cake tins with butter, flour, and parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: cake flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.
  3. Mix wet ingredients: milk, sour cream, and vanilla in another bowl.
  4. In a stand mixer, cream the butter and sugar until smooth; then add whisked egg whites gradually.
  5. Alternate adding the dry and wet mixtures to the batter until just combined.
  6. Divide the batter into prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  7. Cool cakes in pans for 15 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.
